| For the PC:
Paint Shop Pro is a shareware program that let's you create original graphics, use plug-in filters, and deform your graphics with some cool effects. Graphic Workshop is a shareware program from Alchemy Mindworks. It is excellent for working on photos, converting image types, and maximizing JPEG compression. Xara 3D is an excellent program for making animated text graphics. It works well with most dingbats too. Gif Construction Set also from Alchemy Mindworks is the easiest animated gif maker I have found. You can get all three of thses shareware programs from:
For the Mac:
For Both Mac and PC: If you've got the bucks Photoshop by Adobe is the best graphic program I have found. It supports plug-ins such as Kai Power Tools, Alien Skin's Eye Candy, and Blade Pro by Flaming Pear. Does Layering and has many built in effects. Their newest version Photoshop 5.0 is the best, but any of their versions are great. It takes a little studying, but that's only because it can do so much. |

| F.T.P. - stands for File Transport Protocol. That is the standard
for transfering files from one computer to another across the internet.
The programs we use to take care of the complicated details are called
FTP programs.
Some servers, such as Tripod, have built in FTP programs that work
from your browser, but nothing beats the control of a dedicated FTP program.
On windows I use WS-FTP. It is simple to use and lets you see both the
directory on the server and the directory on your PC at the same time.
On the Macintosh I use Fetch. It is also easy to use although it only shows
the server's directory.

There are a lot of different browsers out there. You should have
at least the 2 major browsers, Netscape and Internet Explorer. They are
both free and have versions for all platforms. There are also different
versions of the same browser:
With the evolution of the internet has come evolution of the languages used to write web pages. Some of the older browsers don't support the more advanced forms of javascript, can't display tables, or maybe can't use frames. Also javascipts work differently on Netscape and Internet Explorer. Although it would be nice to have different versions of the same browser on the same computer, most PCs don't like it. You Might also like to look at some of the less popular browsers. A new up and comer is Neoplanet (for PC only). Don't feel left out Mac users, there is Cyberdog which was written exclusively for the Macintosh. You can get any of these plus a lot more at CNET Here is a breakdfown of the browser hits
